Who are you?
I'm Alex. My username's pronounced "kawz-RAL-ecks." I study information science and human communication, with cartooning as one of my side hobbies.
When did you start drawing?
I've been at it since 2015, but didn't start taking things seriously until beginning college.
For a very long time, my work was shaped by online fandoms and misguided influences, and it seemed like I was more worried about how it looked to others rather than myself.
Why make this website?
I wanted to make a dedicated hub to get away from the woes of social media. While it may be useful for getting discovered, I don't think it should be my only outlet. I attempted to use Carrd and WordPress before discovering NeoCities. I appreciated the other platforms' modularity, but I wanted to experiment with pure HTML and CSS.
Who are your art influences?
Too many to count. Right now, I'm influenced by:
- Berkeley Breathed (Bloom County [1980-1989 run], Outland)
- Bill Watterson (Calvin and Hobbes)
- Walt Kelly (Pogo)
- Jim Woodring (Frank)
- Joe Murray (Rocko's Modern Life)
- Mitch Schauer (The Angry Beavers)
- Otto Messmer (Felix the Cat)
- Ub Iwerks (Mickey Mouse, Flip the Frog)
- Bill Mayer (commercial illustrations; Rippingtons album art)
- Susumu Matsushita (commercial illustrations; Famitsu covers)
...and others.
What's on the site?
Eventually, I'll have most of my digital art, traditional experiments, and photography on here. There's a lot of fanart in my backlog, but I still like some of it enough to show off. I even have a few characters lying around - you'll see more of them later...
Thanks for stopping by!
